Clean at the source

Clean at the source.
Your products were never the problem.

A shower is the most repeated chemical exposure your skin and hair take in a day. The water hitting you carries chlorine, chloramine, and trace metals — and the most effective routine starts before a single product is applied. This page is the short-form version of the science behind every HYYGIA cartridge.

The problem

Even soft-water cities are a hard-water problem.

Hard water (calcium and magnesium) is the easy story. The harder story is what the utility adds on top of it to keep the pipes sterile — chlorine and chloramine — and what those oxidizers do to the cuticle and the skin barrier after ten minutes of hot exposure.

1.2ppm chlorine

In New York City tap water

A typical chlorinated municipal read for zip 10001. The EPA allows up to 4.0 ppm at the tap — most large US utilities sit between 1.0 and 1.6 ppm.

0.8ppm chloramine

Chlorine + ammonia, harder to filter

Most major US metros have moved to chloramine for longer-lasting disinfection in the distribution system. Carbon-only filters handle it poorly — Vitamin C neutralizes both.

~10minute barrier exposure

Every hot shower, every single day

A typical shower soaks the stratum corneum long enough to lift the cuticle and leach barrier lipids. Over weeks the result is post-shower tightness, frizz, and that perpetually-dry feeling — even with good products.

On skin. Chlorine and chloramine strip the lipid layer your skin barrier depends on, leaving a tight, itchy, post-shower feeling that looks like a product reaction but is actually a water reaction. Over weeks the reactive cascade is what shows up as redness, flaking, and the compromised-barrier flare-ups.

On textured, curly, or coily hair. A more open cuticle is what gives curls their spring — but it is also what makes textured hair absorb more of everything dissolved in the water. Oxidizers lift the cuticle further, leaving frizz, faster color fade, more single-strand knots, and that perpetually-dry feeling even after a deep condition. For the depth of the mechanism, see the FAQ.

The chemistry

Ascorbic acid donates electrons.
Oxidizers stop reacting.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a reducing agent. When it meets an oxidizer — chlorine, chloramine, dissolved ozone — it donates electrons and hands back neutral, non-reactive byproducts. The water that lands on your cuticle and your skin barrier is dramatically less aggressive, without softening the water or stripping the minerals your body actually uses.

C
Chlorine & Chloramine Neutralizer

Ascorbic acid instantly neutralizes up to 99% of chlorine and chloramines — the reactive compounds that strip your skin barrier with every shower.

Each tab maps to one of the three layers inside the HYYGIA cartridge. Vitamin C neutralizes oxidizers, probiotics modulate the showerhead microbiome, jojoba restores the lipid barrier.

Chelation. Ascorbic acid reduces chlorine (HOCl/OCl⁻) and chloramine (NH₂Cl) into chloride and harmless nitrogen byproducts. A quality cartridge will neutralize the majority of free chlorine on contact and a significant share of chloramine — branded on HYYGIA as 99% chlorine reduction in typical municipal water.

Why this beats a carbon-only filter. Standard carbon filters handle free chlorine well but do a poor job on chloramine, which is the disinfectant most major US metros have moved to because it lasts longer in the distribution system. Vitamin C neutralizes both. Pairing it with KDF-55 fills in the heavy-metal pass.

Finite lifetime. Because Vitamin C is consumed in the reaction, the cartridge runs out. The rule of thumb is six months for an average household, three for high-usage or chloramine-heavy utilities — the ascorbic-acid media visibly discolors as it depletes.

The differentiation

Three layers.
One cartridge. No compromise.

A standalone Vitamin C shower filter handles chlorine and chloramine — a real upgrade on its own. What it doesn't do is manage the biofilm building up inside the showerhead line, or replace the lipid your skin barrier loses every shower. Those are the two most common complaints from people who switch water but still feel itchy, tight, or dry. The HYYGIA cartridge handles both in the same pass.

C

Ascorbic-acid media

Vitamin C

Reduces free chlorine and a meaningful share of chloramine on contact. Branded as "neutralizes 99% of chlorine" in the HYYGIA cartridge.

C

KDF-55

Copper-zinc alloy

A redox media that takes a second pass at chloramine and a portion of dissolved heavy metals — the chemistry that lets a Vitamin C-only cartridge fill the gaps a carbon-only one misses.

The Differentiation

Five live strains.
None of the competitors have this.

Every major competitor removes chlorine. HYYGIA goes further — repairing the damage chlorine did to your skin barrier with a probiotic blend that actually survives transit through the filter and reaches your skin.

Lactobacillus Blend — 5 Strains

L

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Microbiome Support

The most researched skin probiotic strain. Helps restore microbial balance disrupted by chlorine exposure and harsh surfactant residue.

L

Lactobacillus plantarum

Skin Barrier Modulation

Signals the skin to produce tighter junction proteins, reducing trans-epidermal water loss and strengthening the lipid matrix.

L

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Inflammation Reduction

Modulates IL-1 and TNF-α release to calm the low-grade inflammatory state chlorine-stressed skin falls into after repeated exposure.

L

Lactobacillus reuteri

Ceramide Synthesis Support

Stimulates fibroblast activity to boost natural ceramide production, rebuilding the skin barrier from the inside rather than occluding it from outside.

L

Bifidobacterium breve

pH Balance Restoration

Colonizes the skin surface and produces lactic acid, gently restoring the acid mantle that chloramine exposure raises above its optimal 4.5–5.5 range.

Secondary Ingredients

O

Jojoba Oil

Barrier Restorer

Cold-pressed from Simmondsia chinensis seeds. Structurally identical to human sebum — absorbs without clogging, replenishes lost lipids.

O

Sunflower Seed Oil

Lipid Replenishment

Rich in linoleic acid (Omega-6). Restores the ceramide-dominant lipid ratio that hard water and chloramine exposure deplete.

Science-backed. Each strain selected from peer-reviewed dermatology literature — not a probiotic marketing deck. Competitors sell chlorine removal. HYYGIA sells skin repair.

Sourcing

Cold-pressed jojoba.
Peer-reviewed strains.

Every ingredient in the cartridge has a sourcing story and a published reason. Nothing is filler, nothing is marketing window-dressing, and nothing requires the buyer to take it on faith.

Jojoba oil
Cold-pressed from Simmondsia chinensis seeds

Cold-pressed (not solvent-extracted) so the lipids stay intact, then released in a micro-deposit dose during every shower — chemically similar enough to human sebum that it slots into the barrier instead of sitting on top of it.

Each strain in the blend has published research behind it — Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, and Bifidobacterium breve. We publish the references on request: email hyygia-2@polsia.app.
