A long limestone shelf feeds most Texas groundwater. Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas zip-tested reads sit between 1.4 and 1.6 ppm chlorine on top of elevated calcium and magnesium — a double dose of cuticle and barrier stress every shower.

Florida groundwater passes through limestone and shell-bearing aquifers on its way to your tap. Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville carry meaningful hardness even after municipal softening, and the warm climate amplifies the effect on the lipid barrier.

The definition

Hard water is mostly mineral.
Not the same as chlorinated.

"Hard water" is shorthand for two dissolved minerals — calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) — picked up as groundwater passes through limestone and dolomite rock. The US Geological Survey grades water on grains-per-gallon (gpg): under 3.5 gpg is "soft," over 7 gpg is "hard," and a meaningful share of US metros read above 10 gpg out of the tap.

Hardness is a separate axis from chlorine. A softener targets calcium and magnesium but does not touch the oxidizers a utility adds to disinfect the lines — and vice versa: a Vitamin C shower filter neutralizes the oxidizers but does not remove the mineral load. Most households that need to take both seriously end up combining them, often in a single shower pass.

Hardness varies sharply across the US.

The hair impact

What hard water does to textured, curly, and coily hair.

On the cuticle. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the cuticle the same way they deposit on a showerhead: as a visible film that roughens the surface, dulls color, and lifts the cuticle further than your conditioner is trying to close it. The effect compounds with every shower, which is why switching products rarely shifts it — the residue is upstream of the product.

On textured and curly hair. A more open cuticle is what gives curls their spring, but it is also what makes textured hair absorb more of everything dissolved in the water — including the mineral load. The cumulative result is the frizz, single-strand knots, faster color fade, and that perpetually-dry feeling even after a deep condition. Facts vs Fiction

The five most common hard-water myths.

Hard water is an easy topic to misdiagnose. The five takes below are the ones we hear most often from new customers, with the short version of why each one misses.

Fiction: "Hard water is just minerals — it can't really do anything."
Fact: It does. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the cuticle and the skin barrier visibly over weeks.

Mineral buildup on a showerhead is the easy tell. On the cuticle, the same residue roughens the surface, dulls color-treated hair, and makes textured hair tangle faster. On skin, it changes the lather profile of your cleanser and leaves a residue most people read as "dry skin."

Fiction: "If I soften my water, hard water stops being a problem."
Fact: A whole-home softener helps, but showers still carry the oxidizers a softener does not touch.

Ion-exchange softeners swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, which addresses scale. Chlorine and chloramine are a separate problem — a softener does not neutralize either. The complete shower pass usually combines both, often in a single Vitamin C cartridge.

Fiction: "Hard water is a Western and Southern problem, not an East Coast one."
Fact: Regional hardness varies sharply, but the oxidizer layer is everywhere.

New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago — softer on calcium and magnesium than TX or FL, but high enough on chlorine and chloramine to do meaningful barrier work. "Hard water" as a story is not one story.

Fiction: "A clarifying shampoo is enough to undo the damage."
Fact: Clarifying addresses product buildup, not mineral deposition — and over-clarifying compounds the barrier loss.

A low-pH or chelating shampoo is the right occasional reset for product and mild mineral film. It does not lift weeks of calcium and magnesium from the cuticle on its own, and frequent clarifying is itself a barrier stressor.

Fiction: "Bottled shower water isn't a thing — you either filter or you don't."
